This 3-year study into back pain across the globe published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet reports that our current treatments for back pain are lacking in evidence of effectiveness. See article below

This research paper [below] shows how the Psoas Major Muscle exerts huge compression and sheer forces on our low spine resulting in crumpling and severely shearing the lumbar spine.

I applaud our professional body, the Australian Physiotherapy Association, for publishing the facts on low back pain in the latest journal and bringing it front and centre of mind for all therapists. It unequivocally states that the evidence is that the statistics on people who suffer low back pain shows that they will continue to get repeat episodes after they have treatment.

Repeat Episodes Of Back Pain Tend To Re-appear Quite Quickly

These episodes come on quite quickly and depending on how many previous episodes have been experienced, the time between each subsequent episode is within a few months. This is in spite of having had treatment and other interventions for the back pain.

Why Does Back Pain Continue To Recur?

When I first Graduated and started my first position treating men from the Holden Car Plant at Elizabeth in Adelaide I thought I was going to get them all better and they would not need any more treatment.

To my dismay this did not happen. These men kept on returning with the same back problem quite soon after they had been treated.

I thought I was doing something wrong, that I couldn’t get them better!

It was at this time I started to look outside of physiotherapy and began to do more courses and read up on what else was out there to help these men.

In 2005 I found the research that led me to change everything that I had been taught. I now use this exclusively in my clinic.

I think as therapists it is time we meet the challenge of being able to get a better outcome for these people who have put their faith and trust in us to deliver them the best outcomes and stop over-diagnosing back pain.

In my experience, with the method I use which does get ongoing results, I have people returning to me because they want to Stay good.

They say that they are moving better and that they are able to do things they have not dared to do previously with other treatments.

So if what the majority of therapists inside and outside of physiotherapy (across all musculoskeletal disciplines) is not working, why do we continue to treat back pain as we have for the last fifty to sixty years and how we are still training undergraduates to treat today in the university?

I think its time for some long awaited honest discussion within our profession in an endeavor to stop over diagnosing symptoms and start looking at the body in an holistic way and stop compartmentalising the body into pain areas, then we can resolve ongoing pain for good.
