Headaches are a Pain In the Neck! 

Many therapists are treating headaches in the upper neck area. This is because this is how we are trained to treat cervicogenic headaches.  However, if our posture is not good then you can be assured that your headache will return.

Headaches are Caused by Bad Posture

If you are experiencing Headaches or Neck Pain, then maybe you need to look at your whole posture: not just your neck posture. Because if your Pelvis is not level and you have a short leg and your trunk is in a forward head position then just treating your neck will only give short term results for your headaches.

How Does Our Posture Change

Our Posture changes through and because of the compression of our postural muscles. Our postural muscles sit deep inside and attach to our low spine. The act of constant and repetitive sitting over many years causes these huge muscles to compress and start to tilt the pelvis and the spine then is out of alignment.

Why Is It Important To Have Good Cervical Spine Support In Bed

Our neck needs to have optimal support when we are in bed. So having a posture pillow is vital to give our neck the support it needs. Without this our neck will be tilted to one side or the other creating bad alignment and jamming up the cervical vertebral bodies.  These are the structures that when jammed up will cause headaches.

There are two positions to avoid in Bed

The worst is laying on your stomach with your neck twisted to the side – this position winds up your neck joints putting pressure on the nerves in your neck.  This position can lead to neck issues, headaches and even pins and needles into your arms and fingers.

The other position is side lying with a pillow that is too low or does not support your neck at all, this is also going to lead to over-stretching the joints and ligaments of the neck.

The sleeping posture in your neck should be with the neck joints in neutral with good support in the side lying position.

With a good Posture pillow there is good support in the side lying position and back lying position.

The posture is well supported on the neck leading to better sleep and less chance of damage to the joints and nerves in the neck.
